The Cold

 Human arrogance is dangerous.

Well. Adult arrogance. Children aren't arrogant in the way adults are. Somewhere in their mind, they know something adults have not only forgot, but actively fight against the very idea of.

We can still be prey.

Many young animals know how to hide from predators.

Humans took a different tactic; they made their tribes and those tribes could defend their most vulnerable from dangerous creatures.

Too many victories made humans complacent.

Too many easy years made humans stupid.

They have mistakenly begun to believe they are the apex of life on Earth and they have accidentally made the climate unstable.

And this has made real apex beings very, very desperate.

Without regular snow, one of these beings barely has any chance to feed.

As little as a century ago, one or two children per decade would satiate it.

Now it doesn't snow enough.

Now this thing lives in a void, existing only in a semi-conscious state of gnawing hunger.

On the coldest days, it will sing with songs the adults cannot hear.

On the coldest nights, it shines with lights the adults cannot see.

And it eats like a starving street cat, certain this could be the very last time.

We can only be certain of one thing: that soon, we will all have a very last time of our own.
